The Scandinavian Birding Experience |

Falsterbo |

|
Though Sweden offers great birding through the year, I have chosen the autumn migration at Falsterbo as the setting for this holiday program. More venues will be added with time. The trip is based on a 4 day break, either a long weekend or mid-week if that suits you better. The trips can also be extended if you want a longer holiday.

Mid August –Mid September 2008 15-18/8 - 22-25/8 - Falsterbo is great at any time of the year but the autumn migration is especially exciting. For the bird of prey enthusiast, Falsterbo is the place to be. |

The Trip With nearly three whole days and what we can cram in on the fourth day, before your return flights home, it will be none stop birding. We will not have a day plan other than we start at Nabben on day two and three. After that we will head to other localities depending on weather conditions and what’s about. Later in the afternoon we will head inland and check the many lakes and woodlands. For those who have not experienced sun-rise at Nabben, and the thousands of birds, then you can look forward to a memorable experience. Nabben in itself is a peninsula that forms part of a large low lying sand island known as Måkläppen. Here you will find uncountable numbers of Great Cormorants and Gulls. Other than that there will be a none stop movement of wildfowl and waders. However amongst these hoards of birds, we must not forget to look up for hopefully there will be migrating European Honey Buzzards while over Måkläppen Marsh Harriers, Eurasian Sparrowhawks, Merlins and maybe the odd Peregrine Falcon will be playing havoc with the many migrants that are passing through, feeding or trying to rest.

From Nabben the next stop will either be Ljungen, Kanalen or maybe both. Once again it will be migrating birds of prey that are our main target species. Though it is always exciting watching raptors, there are other species to be seen. Skåne as the area is known has some great lakes and woodland areas. During the first three days we will be visiting such localities as Fyledalen. This is an area of mature woodland with a good population of Red Kite and usually one or two Golden Eagle. Woodland species include Black and Green Woodpecker as well as good selection of the commoner passerines as well as species like Common Crossbill and the shyer Hawfinch |

|
Away from the more traditional bird of prey areas we will be visiting wetland localities like Krankesjöen, Vombs ängar and the new man made lake at Näsbyholm just to name a few. Though we will spend most of time looking at wetland species, there will still be birds of prey with species like Eurasian Hobby and Osprey favouring these types of habitat. There is nothing quite like watching a Hobby dart after dragonflies over the reedbeds or a Osprey plummet to catch a fish. Many may find these wetland areas more interesting than the bird of prey localities, and that is not surprising with large numbers of waterfowl and several interesting passerines. |

For birders arriving from the UK. Ryanair have a flight that leaves early in the morning, giving you nearly a full days birding on the day of your arrival and a late evening flight on the day of your return |
